When I met Jesus, He didn’t ask me to stop dancing; He just asked me to change dance partners. Jesus wants His children to dance, and I’ve since learned that the many dance partners I had in my life were stepping on my toes—and my heart. There is a world of dance partners who wanted to lead, promising to make me happy, and I gladly followed, trying to stay in step with mesmerizing lyrics and soaring melody that whirled me up high—only to glide off and leave me alone on the dance floor. But each time I agreed to learn the new steps with a new partner, I discovered that my lead had put a pair of shoes on my feet that were a size too small. Before long, every step was agony until I couldn’t stand it anymore, tearing the shoes off my feet in bitter disappointment. Then I met Jesus. I stumbled a bit with my reply. “Well, it’s good, Dad. At least—I hope it’s good.” Dad’s earthly journey would end just a few weeks later. He was literally on his deathbed. Coming from my father as it did, the question was especially jarring. Dad had never been one for church or anything approaching “spiritual” discussions. It’s urgent, demanding immediate attention. Consider Numbers 12:13 when Moses cried out to the Lord for his sister, Miriam: “Please, God, heal her!” Or David in Psalm 12:1, “Help, Lord, for the godly are fast disappearing!” Or how about Peter in Matthew 14:30 as he slipped beneath the waves? “Lord, save me!” There are times of crisis when the only English word we need (or have time for) is help! Many words aren’t needed. What is needed are sincere, to-the-point calls and cries to God for His outstretched arm and mighty hand to help us. What about the two blind men in Matthew 20:31, who were essentially told to “shut up” and not cry out to Jesus in their desperate need? “Be silent!” the crowd yelled at them. But they only shouted louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” When King Jehoshaphat saw his city surrounded by a barbarian horde, he didn’t call a committee meeting; he cried out to the Lord: “We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you” 2 Chronicles 20:12 (NIV). Their dramatic story unfolds in the third chapter of Daniel. The unwavering faith and courage of these three young men, taken as captives to Babylon by King Nebuchadnezzar, were faced with a dreadfully difficult decision when the king commanded everyone to worship the golden statue he had erected in the plain of Dura. The king had threatened to throw anyone who refused to worship the statue into a furnace of fire. King Nebuchadnezzar built a polished gold statue, 90 feet high and 9 feet thick at its base. The sight of the enormous eight-story idol must have been jaw dropping as it was being erected on the plain Dura, near the capitol of Babylon. This is a harsh, hot climate that dazzled the idol in sunlight, giving it an even more ominous appearance. When it was finished, everyone from government officials to families going about their daily routines were commanded to drop and worship the image. People gathered as commanded, until the crowd pushed and heaved, struggling for position. Large crowds can change in an instant, quickly becoming restless, pressed, and anxious, especially in an atmosphere such as this one.
